The Director of Product Engineering is responsible for providing leadership and guidance to engineering, product development, supporting operational excellence within engineering and supply chain to support growth of the business platform. In this role, the Director will support and advise the VP/GM, Director of Engineering, Project Engineers and Design Management and provide support/guidance to Project Management, Supply chain and Service teams, as required. The role will help support the Director of Engineering in optimizing workflow processes to ensure efficient engineering deliverables for both internal and external customers. The role will also help develop the Platform’s in-house (direct hire) and outsourced (3rd party) engineering capabilities to ensure on-time and effective deliverables to customers. The role will lead a quality control initiative with the engineering staff to improve the accuracy of engineering deliverables. The role will support platform leadership on active projects, product development and supply chain initiatives.


This position will play an active role in the development of new products or enhancements of existing products, to bring to market. The Director stays aware of emerging technologies, drives continuous engineering excellence, process improvements, and strengthens the overall organization. This position includes supplier interaction and provides advice and support to business unit management.


This position possesses a strong technical and business vision and the ability to foster innovation and adhere to schedules and technical principles. The Director fosters cross functional partnerships and collaboration, as required, to achieve engineering excellence and supply chain goals. The Director develops engineering design guidelines and operational processes to mitigate technical and commercial risk. This position leads by example, mentors the team, and establishes credibility through quality execution. Projects are complex and require hands-on guidance. This position requires advisement and support of project and product engineering and technical staff. The Director demonstrates an understanding of the business environment and relevant strategic, development and operational drivers.

Your Responsibilities Will Be:


Strategic Leadership and Collaboration

 

• Develop and implement a strategic vision and technology roadmap in collaboration with Platform Management, Director of Engineering, Project Managers, and Supply Chain teams to meet customer expectations, diversify business offerings, and manage risk.

• Act as a trusted advisor to leadership and cross-functional teams in the development of new processes, solutions, and projects. Provide guidance and expertise during project development and implementation phases.

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure effective project execution, particularly in engineer-to-order or custom product designs, ensuring alignment with business goals and customer needs.

 

Project and Risk Management


• Provide guidance in addressing technical challenges throughout the product lifecycle, ensuring efficient problem-solving and resolution.
• Analyze project data and engineering metrics to provide actionable recommendations and solutions based on engineering principles and industry best practices.
• Identify potential risks within engineering projects and proactively develop and implement mitigation strategies to ensure successful outcomes.

 

Team Development and Mentorship


• Mentor, and support the professional growth of engineering staff, including junior engineers and technical staff.
• Develop and deliver training initiatives that promote continuous learning and the adoption of best practices across the engineering team.
• Foster a creative and innovative work environment where team members are empowered to contribute ideas and solutions.

 

Cost Optimization and Supplier Management


• Collaborate with Supply Chain teams to identify cost-effective solutions and design reviews that lead to engineering cost savings and improved product margins.
• Establish technical review processes for external suppliers to ensure high-quality deliverables and adherence to engineering standards.
• Assist in cost-out initiatives by evaluating designs, engineering processes, and sourcing strategies for opportunities to reduce expenses without compromising product quality.

 

Process and Standards Development


• Develop, implement, and maintain engineering design guidelines and operational processes to ensure high-quality engineering deliverables and mitigate technical and commercial risks.
• Work closely with cross-functional teams to establish and enforce consistent engineering standards that enhance workflow efficiencies and product quality.
• Support best practices and continuous improvement initiatives to drive engineering excellence across the organization.

 

Innovation and Technology Leadership


• Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends to drive continuous innovation and the adoption of cutting-edge solutions in engineering design and product development.
• Bring thought leadership to the organization by assessing current practices, identifying areas for improvement, and leading efforts to transform engineering operations.

 

Optimizing Workflow Processes and Resource Allocation


• Continuously assess and refine engineering workflows to eliminate inefficiencies, reduce bottlenecks, and ensure timely delivery of engineering outputs. This includes improving collaboration between design, engineering, and supply chain teams and ensuring that the right resources (both human and technical) are allocated to projects based on priority and expertise.
• Streamlining workflows and ensuring optimal resource allocation leads to faster project execution, reduced delays, and enhanced team efficiency.

 

Manufacturing and Quality Assurance Support


• Collaborate with Manufacturing, Fabrication, and Quality Assurance teams to ensure that designs are manufacturable and meet engineering specifications, customer requirements, and industry regulations.
• Ensure that products are designed with manufacturability in mind to minimize production and operating issues and meet delivery schedules.

 

Workforce Planning and Talent Acquisition


• Support workforce planning efforts with engineering leadership to assess and determine staffing requirements for internal resources (Mechanical, Electrical, Software Controls, and Applications) versus outsourcing options.
• Play an active role in the recruitment and development of engineering talent to ensure the team has the necessary expertise to execute projects and meet business goals.

 

Customer and Stakeholder Engagement


• Support and guidance with key liaison initiatives between customers and internal teams, providing technical expertise and support to ensure that customer needs are met effectively and efficiently.
• Engage with clients/partners (internal/external) to understand their technological needs and promote the company’s engineering capabilities to help advance their objectives.
• Works with Platform Management, Engineering, Project Managers, Supply Chain and Services to develop a strategic vision and the technology roadmap to meet and or exceed customer expectations, diversify the business, and manage risk.
• Collaborates with Business Development, Project Management, Operations and Engineering Leadership to develop new solutions and products, and to improve execution of engineer-to-order or custom projects.
• Helps develop engineering staff for improved customer experiences.
• Advise Supply Chain on options for improved cost options.
• Cost-Out options via design reviews and engineering.
• Establish proper technical review for suppliers.
• Brings thought leadership and best practices to company, and integrate based on what’s currently working, where we need to improve, and where we need to transform.
• Establishes process and standards for the Engineering department, collaborating across the entire organization.
• Works as a trusted advisor to customers on CECO technological capabilities to advance their business.
• Drives Workforce Planning with Leadership to determine build, buy, borrow decisions for engineering resources (Mechanical, Electrical, Software Controls and Applications).
• Promotes a creative and innovative work environment where leaders are empowered, and employee ideas are encouraged.
• Interfaces with Sales, Marketing and Customers to ensure that the business direction is driven by the voice of the customer and that CECO’s products meet and exceed the needs of our customers and end users.
• Engages team to collaborate on meeting customer needs.
• Interfaces with team in support of Manufacturing, Fabricators, and Quality Assurance to ensure that products are manufacturable robust designs and that our finished product meets customer expectations, engineering specifications, and industry regulations.
• Manages costs across the business including external contractors, fabricators, major components, expenditures, designs, etc. to ensure profitability.
• Assists the Director of Engineering with coaching and mentoring engineers, designers and drafters.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications:


• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or science is required.
• 10+ years of experience leading the Engineering team(s) responsible for designing, manufacturing, and testing of mechanical engineered equipment - Specific pollution control equipment is preferred.
• 10+ years of technical work function and communicating directly with customers.
• Leadership roles in previous organizations.
• Knowledge of Oil & Gas, Power Generation and Industrial market.
• Understanding of Custom-Engineered solutions.
• Demonstrated problem solving experience, including managing processes and teams performing product failure analysis / root cause analysis.
• MS Office Suite.

Knowledge:


• Engineering and Technology - Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
• Design - Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of equipment fabrication plans, drawings, and models.
• Mechanical - Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
• Physics  - Knowledge and prediction of physical principles, laws, their interrelationships, and applications to understanding fluid, particles, material, and atmospheric dynamics, mechanical, and electrical processes.
• Microsoft Office Suite: Oracle, ADP, D365 and Epicor is beneficial.
• Administration and Management - knowledge of business and management principles involved in P&L management, human resources staffing and evaluation, leadership technique and coordination of people and resources.
• Business Analytics and Best Practices a plus.
• English Language - Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar.

Travel Requirements:

  • Ability to travel, as required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:


• Familiarity with metal fabrication specifications a plus.
• Six Sigma and Lean experience is preferred.
• Project management experience is a plus.

 

Licensing or Certifications:

  • Professional Engineering (PE) or other certifications a plus.
