The Controller, Inventory/Cost Accounting is responsible for overseeing inventory valuation, cost accounting processes, and financial reporting related to inventory and cost of goods sold. This role ensures accurate inventory valuation using FIFO and standard costing methodologies, analyzes cost drivers and purchase price variances, strengthens internal controls, and supports compliance with accounting standards. The position partners with operations, procurement, and finance teams and manages inventory processes within the ERP environment.

 

Your Responsibilities Will Be

Inventory Valuation & Cost Accounting

  • Manage and oversee inventory valuation processes using FIFO and standard costing methodologies.
  • Ensure accurate standard cost setup, updates, and maintenance within D365.
  • Monitor and analyze inventory transactions, cost rollups, and cost allocations.
  • Review inventory reconciliations and resolve discrepancies between subledger and general ledger.
  • Maintain accurate cost of goods sold (COGS) reporting, including full absorption and/or abnormal cost indicators.

 

Cost Analysis & Purchase Price Variance (PPV)

 

  • Analyze manufacturing and procurement costs to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for cost savings.
  • Monitor and report on purchase price variances (PPV) and investigate significant fluctuations.
  • Partner with procurement and operations teams to improve cost efficiency and pricing strategies.
  • Prepare cost analysis reports and provide recommendations to leadership.

 

Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365) ERP Management

  • Oversee inventory and cost accounting processes within Microsoft Dynamics 365.
  • Ensure data integrity, accurate system configuration, and consistent use of costing methods.
  • Support system implementations, enhancements, testing, and process improvements.
  • Train and support users on inventory and costing processes.\

 

Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Design, implement, and maintain strong internal controls over inventory and cost accounting processes.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, GAAP, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support internal and external audit activities, including documentation and testing of controls.
  • Identify control gaps and implement corrective actions.

 

Financial Reporting

  • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes related to inventory and cost accounting.
  • Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial analysis.
  • Provide inventory and cost-related disclosures for financial statements.
  • Develop management reporting and KPIs related to inventory performance.

 

Excess & Obsolescence Reserves

  • Manage processes for identifying excess and obsolete inventory.
  • Develop and maintain reserve methodologies and supporting documentation.
  • Review inventory aging reports and recommend reserve adjustments.
  • Collaborate with operations and supply chain teams to minimize inventory risk.

 

Process Improvement & Leadership

  • Identify opportunities to improve inventory accuracy, cost transparency, and operational efficiency.
  • Develop policies and procedures for inventory and cost accounting functions.
  • Lead and mentor accounting staff, where applicable.
  • Partner cross-functionally with supply chain, operations, and finance leadership.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business is required.
  • 7+ years of experience required.
  • Proficient understanding of US GAAP, financial statements, and accounting theory required, including SOX compliance.
  • Strong knowledge of FIFO and standard costing methodologies.
  • Be a proactive advocate of change through analysis of the business processes.
  • Advanced skill in Excel, Word with strong written and oral communication skills that enables clear communication to all levels of management.
  • Intermediate ERP Systems experience with Microsoft D365 preferred.
  • Execute responsibilities with a sense of urgency and follow-through.
  • Demonstrated abilities to prioritize and manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment to meet deadlines with efficiency and accuracy.

 

Travel Requirements (Requirement): The ability to travel when necessary

ADA Requirements

This position is based at the headquarters located in Dallas, TX. This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands

This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to move files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary.

  • The job is typically performed under comfortable working conditions; any disagreeable elements are generally absent during normal performance of job.
  • Compliance with company attendance standards.

 

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.
