The Designer is responsible for developing clear, practical equipment layouts, proposal drawings, customer submittals, and conceptual design packages for heavy industrial equipment and air pollution control systems. This role emphasizes strong designer judgment, spatial layout capability, drawing communication, coordination with project stakeholders, and the ability to translate customer and application requirements into workable equipment arrangements. 3D modeling is an important tool used in this position, particularly with Autodesk Inventor, but it is secondary to the broader Designer responsibilities of developing accurate layouts, identifying equipment interfaces, supporting proposal development, and communicating design intent. This position is not primarily responsible for detailed engineering design or fabrication-ready drawings. The position works closely with Sales, Applications Engineering, Project Management, and Engineering teams to develop accurate and professional proposal packages for customers.

Your Responsibilities Will Be:

  • Develop conceptual equipment layouts, general arrangement drawings, and proposal-level design packages for heavy industrial equipment and complete process systems.
  • Use Autodesk Inventor and other CAD tools to support layout development, visualization, and coordination of equipment arrangements.
  • Prepare proposal drawings and customer submittal packages that clearly communicate scope, equipment configuration, interfaces, and dimensional requirements.
  • Develop equipment layouts, plant arrangements, and preliminary system configurations for customer evaluation, budgeting, and internal review.
  • Apply designer judgment to equipment such as SCR systems, catalytic reactors, stacks, dampers, expansion joints, ducting systems, fans, process piping, and related environmental process equipment.
  • Develop visual representations and drawing views that communicate project concepts, installation requirements, maintenance access, and equipment interfaces.
  • Support estimating and proposal teams by preparing preliminary layouts and dimensional information for quotations and budgetary pricing.
  • Modify and update conceptual drawings based on customer feedback, evolving project requirements, and internal review comments.
  • Coordinate with Sales, Applications Engineering, Engineering, and Project Management to ensure drawings accurately reflect project scope and customer requirements.
  • Maintain standard drawing templates, model libraries, and equipment configurations used for product development.
  • Assist with preliminary space allocation, equipment fit-up reviews, and site layout evaluations.
  • Organize and manage Inventor models, drawings, and documentation in accordance with company document control practices.
  • Support the transition of awarded projects by providing conceptual models and project information to detailed engineering teams.
  • Incorporate design input related to thermal expansion, thermal insulation, and mechanical loading as directed by senior designers or engineers.
  • Perform geometric and material calculations (lengths, areas, volumes, weights, angles, centers of gravity) to support engineering and supply chain.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary coordination with Engineering, Project Management, and Sales to support project execution.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Drafting Technology, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience as a designer or drafter supporting industrial equipment, mechanical systems, plant layouts, or similar technical projects.
  • Strong CAD drafting and layout skills, with working proficiency in Autodesk Inventor or similar 3D modeling software.
  • Experience preparing conceptual layouts, general arrangement drawings, proposal drawings, and customer-facing technical documentation.
  • Strong visualization, spatial layout, and equipment arrangement skills.
  • Ability to interpret customer specifications, sketches, P&IDs, equipment data, and engineering input and translate them into clear conceptual layouts.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple project activities simultaneously.
  • Ability to recognize equipment interfaces, access needs, maintenance clearances, and practical layout constraints during early design development.
  • Ability to perform basic geometric and material quantity calculations accurately.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience designing or laying out air pollution control equipment, process equipment, or other heavy industrial systems.
  • Familiarity with SCR systems, baghouses, electrostatic precipitators (ESPs), ducting systems, dampers, stacks, and related industrial equipment.
  • Experience supporting sales, estimating, applications engineering, or proposal development activities.
  • Understanding of industrial plant layouts and equipment arrangement principles.
  • Knowledge of fabrication and manufacturing processes sufficient to develop practical, buildable conceptual layouts.
  • Experience preparing customer-facing drawings and proposal packages.
  • Familiarity with Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk Vault, or other CAD modeling and document management systems.
  • Exposure to hot exhaust or flue gas ducting systems operating at elevated temperatures.
  • Basic understanding of thermal expansion concepts in large ducting or plate structures.
  • Knowledge of common industrial welding practices and fabrication constraints.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs and coordinate ducting layouts with process requirements.
  • BSME or BSCE with focus on Structural Engineering.
